Mourning A Baby Name Is Totally Appropo, Right?

When "they" say "opposites attract," they sure are as heck aren't kidding. The Husband and I are living proof of that statement and it always gives us a good laugh when we stumble across our blatant opposite tastes.

For example, he runs hot, I'm always cold. He loves action movies, I'm more of a RomCom girl. He prefers to go to bed early, whereas I prefer to stay up late. Wherein he loves neutral colors, I like a good splash of something bright.

It's a wonder, truly, that we're so in love with each other and have managed to not only decorate an entire house during our {almost}  five years of marriage but also name our first-born.

I'm sure by now you can see where this is leading, no? What happens, I dare ask, when you're pregnant with your second son and you've gone and used up the only "boy" name both you and your husband could agree on?

You see, Loyals, naming Carter was no small feat. I'm not kidding when I say I must have offered up hundreds, no, thousands, of names for C. Each one immediately shot down with a truly ridiculous reason, I'm hesitant to add.

"That sounds like a 40-year-old African American Lawyer," "Does an ark come with that name?" "I once knew a so-and-so and he was a jerk."

After many a small tantrum, The Husband and I finally agreed on Carter's name, a family name on my side (can I get an amen?) and I begrudgingly succumbed to allowing The Husband to sneak his name in as Carter's middle name. After all, my Husband is a junior and there was no way I was naming a III. It just wasn't in the cards for us.

So here were are today, a mere 14 weeks from welcoming our second, nameless son into our family. It's safe to say that I have been throwing out boy names ever since we saw that teenie weenie on the ultrasound machine nearly ten weeks ago.

I even managed to fall in love with a name, which since I've finally come to the realization that it just isn't happening, I've decided to share with you today.

That name is McLane.

I adore this name. No. I that's a lie. I am enamored with this name. Obsessed with it. The Husband? Impartial. Rather, he downright hates it. Why? Because of the damn Die Hard Trilogy. And he thinks it's "only good as a last name."

I give you full permission to smack him. Please.

Shame on me, I even went ahead and had this name monogrammed on an extra PBK chair cover in the hopes that I could eventually convince The Husband that this needed to be our child's name.

I've finally come to the devastating realization that it just ain't gonna happen and now I feel like I need to have a funeral for this name. That's just how much I loved it.

The good news in all of this? M2 has an "almost name." It's actually my #2 favorite name on The List and The Husband doesn't hate it, which is a great sign, if you ask me.

I'm hoping to have his word in writing this weekend that it's actually what we're going with because we all know, Mama's got some serious monogramming to do and time is a' wastin'!

So, does anybody need a red PBK Anywhere Chair cover with the navy personalization "McLane?" No? Good. Because mark my word, Loyals, if we have an M3, you damn well know he or she will be a McLane.

Happy Thursday!

  1. You and The Husband, sound like ME and the Husby! We are COMPLETE opposites AND have yet to even agree on anything resembling a name for our bambino, who by the way is ATTEMPTING to make an early exitus! STAY put baby until we can NAME you (And I can get my monogramming on!)... Cannot wait to hear your name!

  2. Oh the husband name game. We miraculously came to an agreement on both of the names we picked. The 2nd wasn't as easy and I had to pull out the meaning to seal the deal. He went from "not liking it at all" to "oh, I really like that." Go figure. Because really no one ever cares what your name means, but it worked in my favor!

  3. Darn I was still hoping you'd be lamenting that you had a monogrammed PB chair that said McLovin.

Seriously though, as an action movie buff, I kind of see his point about Die Hard. But I see yours too...thankfully you have agreed on the "almost name" :)

  4. RIP McLane or Mac :-( keep the chair cover, I love McLane for a girl!!!!
Cannot wait to hear M2's name!!!

  5. Awww I'm sorry McLane got vetoed by hubs! Andrew and I are the same way though- complete opposites! And that made it really tough on choosing names especially with not finding out the gender! I know it will work out and can't wait to hear what you and M decide on :)

  6. This post made me laugh. I can't wait to hear what you two finally decide on. :)

  7. every evening I would throw out boy's names, hubby would immediately say no... Brycen he paused on and said "hey, I actually like that one" - we didn't go any further as it was the FIRST one he didn't hate. Now I coudln't imagine NOT having a Brycen :) Girls names (before we knew it was a boy) were actually much harder.. I would get "well that was a strippers name" or some crap like that. Good luck - M2 will have an equally fantastic name to his big brother!

  8. The last part where you say "he or she".... that's what I was going to say! If and when you have #3, that's a beautiful girl's name, too, with Laney as a nickname :). Just a thought. Good luck with the name.... my daughter (the oldest) has the fun name (Summer, and my last three sons are all named for family (PHEW!) (Peter, David, and Thomas) :).

    Have a great day!

  9. Oh my god. We're having the same problem over here. I'm 30 weeks along with our boy and we have 3 top names. My husband wants it to be "a game time decision" and I of course want to monogram everything in sight before the baby comes. I feel your pain girl!

  10. Have you tried the same name in a different spelling on him? I get it's not the same, but sounds the same ... like Maclain? Not sure if the pronunciation is exactly the same and if you even like that but sometimes people have aversions to spellings or other things (like 2 capital letters) - not sure if any of that would help win the silly husband over, but....

  11. oh..I can't wait for our photo shoot because you will see how INSANELY DIFFERENT my husband and I are. But we are a good match.

We did the same thing w/ both kids...don't worry...you will figure it out!!!!

  12. Husband and I agreed 100% on a boy's name...then we found out we were having a girl. So we fought/argued about a name for 6 months! And actually didn't agree until the night before she was born.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That sounds like my and my husband. We are expecting our first and we have names picked out whether its a boy or a girl. But if we have a second child that is the same gender....we are going to have a horrible time agreeing on a name!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh man! I totally hear you and feel your pain. It took us forever to agree on our first son's name. Now we are preggers again {ahem, I am preggers not him} and we have to go through the whole process again. UGH!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ahhh, I fear this will happen to us one day! Kids are still a couple years away from us (well, that's the plan anyway) but we've still chatted about favorite names and there are definitely different opinions between the hubby and I.

Hubby's family is HUGE and I always fear one of his brother's wives or close relatives will get preggo first and "steal" the #1 girl name I'm obsessed with. AHHH!

  16. A friend of mine recently laughed at me because The Husband and I have been throwing names at each other for months and we aren't even pregnant yet. We spent a year talking about names for our first child, the second had her name set because we'd come up with a girl name during that first round that we loved. Now every time we see or hear a name we like we say, "Mike?" and the other weighs in. The ones we REALLY like we don't forget so they enter the conversation more often.

  17. I can SOOOO sympathize. It took us forever to choose a name for our son. My husband has "rules" that whatever you name the child is what they must be called...hence he liked the name Drew and I suggested Andrew. That didn't fly. I also insisted on a family name (didn't care which side) but he could have cared less. We each had to make index cards of our fave names and then vote. Good luck with the negotiations!

  18. Can I tell you how much I adore this post?! With baby numbero uno on the way (and its gender tbd) I am dying to know I have Henry locked down as the boy name, but husband is resistant. In fact, there are basically no boy names he approves of because they don't sound good as hockey players or he has weird childhood memories of someone or something. It's driving me cray cray because I'm a planner to the tee and need to know!

  19. Ahahaha! We argued back and forth for our daughter's name. He loved some that I hated and I loved some that he hated. I happen to LOVE McLane, so you must have an M3 down the road! :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. We had a hard time deciding on names too. My husband hated almost everything that wasn't "popular". Sorry to hear McLain was vetoed. I love that name too.

  21. I must admit...McLane is ADORABLE! I have never heard that name (even more reason I likey). But, I am sure name #2 will be just as fabulous...and will keep you from getting divorced! :) Can't wait for the reveal!

  22. LOL, I'm sorry, but I this his excuses for not liking a name are hilarious. Although, I think I might have gone hormonal on him by now, haha.

  23. Oh goodness can I relate. For T, I gave him a million names and he hated them all! We agreed on Taylor because its my maiden name. Middle name I fell in love with Maddyx. He said that was only a last name. I feel your pain!!!!!! I love McLane by the way!!!! :) can't wait to hear the name girl.

  24. hilarious! totally sounds like my fiance´. He'll always comment on my clothes, ewwww, that gross toothpaste green again?

  25. Oh, friend. I'm with you. TC wasn't on board with Hudson's name for a long time and didn't love Hayes's name either for a long time. Don't lose hope for McLane. Maybe he'll come around. :) I can't wait to hear the second name choice though. I know when you see your little man that it will all come together as it should.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahh! I love McLane. My maiden name is Lane and I was dying to give Callan McLane as a middle. (plain Lane doesn't work with our last name) But, my dear his put his foot down. Total sads. :(

  27. Dude, you sound exactly like me. My hubby and I are so opposites!! Like in every single way possible. We have the silliest little squabbles about the silliest little things. But truth be told, we still love each other more than anything - don't quite know how that works. Ha ha.
Oh but the naming the baby thing... ugh. Our first pregnancy, it was almost the death of us trying to choose a name. So much so that we didn't name our son until he was born because we couldn't agree. And then of course, in that moment they handed us our brand spankin' new baby, we couldn't agree more on his name. It was glorious.
This time? Pregnant with a 2nd boy (as you know) and due in less than 4 weeks!!!!!! -- same story. This baby is nameless. We just can not agree. I have thrown out a ridiculous amount of names again and they've all been shot down... yet again. For some silly reason like "oh i knew a guy in high school with that name and he was a wrestler, and i don't like wrestlers". Really????
Gosh... the things we put up with! Ha ha. Best of luck to you in finding a name, I know how tough it is. Especially naming boys, for some reason its WAY harder to name a boy isn't it?!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sigh. My "boy" name has been deemed by Jeff "a last name" name, too: Owen. Seriously? He's NEVER heard Owen as a first name? Katherine is the only name in creation we agreed upon...subsequently, it's all used up and we've got a big fat nothin'.

I've decided that next time - boy or girl - I'm not agreeing to anything. ANYTHING. If he doesn't like my names, I'll be in L&D with a nameless baby if that's what it takes! Immature? Maybe.

  29. Shit.

Well, it's been a while since I commented with my personal account. I guess I was due :)

  31. Ha ha oh man I know that feeling! I was lucky with Zane because James loved it but whenever I get pregnant again all the names I have suggested are not good enough or he doesn't like or he'll have to get used to it. So I basically told him if we have a boy his middle name is going to be James so I get to choose his first name whether you like it or not! I am not going to go back and forth over this... it's just plain ridiculous!

  32. Awwww...I like it! Sads for you but excited to hear what the runner up is!

  33. I go with the "I'm having this baby and ruining my body so I'll name it what I want" deal!! Plus I fill out the paperwork at the hospital. LOL! It's worked every time :-)

I like the name Kaysen (Cason, Cayson). But we had already agreed to name our baby Colton. Does your husband like Lane by itself? Lucas is also another one of my faves. Or Levi. Grayson. Samuel. I could go on and on. I love NAMES!

I have an Emilee Tayte, Zackary Wayne, and Colton James. Wayne is my dads name. And James is my grandpas name. Emilee Tayte is my favorite name out of all my children. I love it!!

  34. I agree with another commenter about McLane for a girl and calling her Laney. Love that name!!

  35. your husband sounds just like mine. Naming our 2 girls was crazy. Like your hubby mine shot down every name I threw out there because too of dump excuses. MEN. I hope you guys agree upon a man soon! I like McLane!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree...McLane would be a really cute girl name. M will just have to suck it up if #3 is a girl! Don't get rid of the PBK cover! You just never know!!!!

    xoxoxo

  37. I agree with everyone else ... keep the chair cover in hopes of baby #3. And? If you don't end up having a third baby? You can get a new puppy who can have a beautiful PBK chair to lounge on.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sorry - love that name, if there is an eventual M3 & you get to use it.

Hands down naming was one of the most stressful parts of my pregnancy. I had my own "junior" naming problem when I had to stand my ground on not having a IV. That got fun, but we did as you did and ended up with a family name on my side as 1st name (*fist pump*) and husband's name as the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  39. aww I love the name McLane, wish your husband did too! Keep the cover for baby 3 :)

  40. I might call M2 McLane anyways. I'm in love with that name. And how are we not related? I'm cold, love RomComs, and I never want to go to bed early! I will say, though that I get to sneak in bright colors- Mark is color blind ;)

  41. I think it's appropriate to mourn! My maiden name began with a Mc and the nurse at the school where I work was so sad when I got married and was no longer a Mc because she had always wanted a name like that. I have considered it for kids but because we have a niece with a Mc already I'm not sure that we will.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh, I couldn't relate more! And this last time around we had 2 to name. I was certain both would be nameless for the first year of life. Ugh. We couldn't be more different when it comes to the names of kids lol! Can't wait to hear what you are naming M2!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I totally sense this coming when my husband and I have kids. I think a lot of guys would equate McLane with Die Hard (which I also hate when my hubby makes me watch) :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh boy, I did the EXACT same thing! I actually CRIED over the name I loved so much. The Hubby was NOT budging though. Luckily, we have both agreed on a name for our son that is due in 1 WEEK!!! And now it seems perfectly fitting, and so will yours when you both decide. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  45. You might hate me for this, but I kind of agree with your hubster. McLane sounds to me like a last name. I'd hate it as a first name... :\

    ReplyDelete
  46. With baby #2 we didn't decide until my husband literally had to go down and fill out the paperwork. Kicking myself for not just agreeing to his name to begin with...because now we're going to be legally adding it -- 20 months later.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Carter is the best name! My husband and I had names picked out for a boy or a girl and Carter was our name for a boy. We had several back up girls names that we both liked, but Carter was THE name for us if we had a boys. Well, I had twin boys and let me tell you, we had the same problems you are having. It was the biggest headache trying to agree on a second boys name. We didn't come to an agreement until a few weeks before I was due. I feel your pain!

  48. Maybe it's a good thing though - what with Die Hard #5 coming out in the next year or so... gotta admit, I think of John McClaine too when I hear McLane. It is too last name-y IMO.

Giving up a name sucks though - I *really* like Atreyu for a boy (Trey for short) but hubby's vetoed it and now that we have Jay, well... even if I did talk him into it, Jay and Trey... too rhyme-y for my liking :-/

  49. Aww, I love McLane! My middle name is Lane. :-)
