Potties, Pinterest, OITNB and More.

It's that time again! Each week, when I remember, I'm becoming more and more grateful for Five on Friday. It gives me the five minutes I need to sit down and clear my head of all the crazy that's been building up all week! Be sure to visit Darci's blog and check out all of the other fabulous posts!

Five: Carter starts his first day of 3-year-old pre-school on September 7th which means I have approximately one month to get him out of diapers. I am a huge proponent of not rushing my kids to do anything until they're ready and this should be no different, however, the looming school deadline is giving me a bit of anxiety. Yesterday, I decided to start the Three Day Potty Method. Let's just say that my kitchen floor has never seen so much pee. At one point I had vivid flashbacks to walking around at one of my husband's college fraternity parties, floors sticky with beer and urine and god knows whatever else but only without the thumping bass and roughly ten pounds fluffier. I don't mean to sound whiny but (I am) and that shit is HARD. In all seriousness, we're doing great but I sure could use a stiff drink (or three).

Four: As much fun and Pinterest-y as owning a home can be, I hate the maintenance. Each month it seems like our "House To-Do List" grows and grows. Last month we had to buy a new refrigerator, which, don't get me wrong, I love so much I could make out with it, but it wasn't cheap. This month we're looking at a new set of garage doors. Three months ago, we were supposed to start working on the built-in's in the playroom but my car needed new tires and brakes. I'm so excited to see what large purchase next month will bring, I can hardly stand it. I love being a grown up.

Three: I love Instagram. If you're not following me, you're missing out on hoards of pictures of my kids, food, the occasional Sheepie and cocktails. It's basically my blog but cuter, less wordy and it doesn't have that lame anti-right click option. I think it's my favorite form of social media.

Two: I finished Orange Is The New Black, loved it and now feel lost without a new show to stream on Netflix. I've never seen a single episode of Pretty Little Liars (gasp!) so I've been contemplating starting although I'm not super excited about it. We've already watched House of Cards and I'm hoping we can take a break from Arrested Development and start Prison Break. I can't believe I just wrote an entire paragraph about TV. What are you watching?

One: Did I mention how hard potty training is? Because it is and it makes me whiny. So whiny I can hardly stand myself. The timer just went off which means there's only approximately twenty-seven trips to the potty between now and when my husband comes home from work. Twenty-seven. Time to go put my big girl panties on and deal with it, although mine surely aren't as cute as Carter's.

Happy Friday!

  2. Been popping by your blog for a while & have never commented. I have been debating about Orange is the New Black for a while...heard good things - you should definitely watch Prison Break. It's a bit violent/rough at times, but I LOVED it! Really liked Pretty Little Liars, but could only get a couple of seasons into it before it was just plain annoying.

  3. Watch PLL, it'll suck you in and not disappoint. Prison Break is awesome for a while but then starts to be super frustrating. And I'm in the middle of OITNB and Arrested now. Good stuff.

  4. Good luck on potty training! I love owning a home, but sometimes being an adult sucks. This week we had had all these bills come in and its NOT fun. I really loved OITNB as well, have you read the book? If not, you should totally check it out!

  6. Potty training is a blast. I'm a firm believer in letting them start when they're ready, too. That's what worked for us. But I also had a slight pressure (as opposed to your strong, actual deadline) of preschool, because we'd like to start it relatively soon, too, and it made me kind of frantic. Good luck!

  7. I hate owning a home sometimes. I'm so tired of spending money on things like oil changes and air conditioning filters instead of clothes.

Also, potty training is the WORST. Part of the reason I'm glad I only have two kids...good luck!!!

  10. You're funny! Instagram is my fav form of social media! (@katievanbrunt) I feel ya on potty training... I thought I'd have it down pat at 18 months, but it was such a fight, and I was completely annoyed with staying home for thee days, that I gave up. However, Emmalyn did take to it a couple of months after her second birthday. I found that one day it "just clicked". There really was no point in trying to force it. Hang in there! 'They say' boys take longer to potty train.

  15. Ugh. We had a minion home repairs this month too. New roof, new gutters, new paint. On the bright side, we started using the cash system and didn't even feel a $500 deductible for our roof (that tells you I waste too much at target) on the down side, we're still using the cash system and today I think I lost $350 of our cash. The ash system is not meant for mommies with infants who still wake all night long. I don't have the where with all to keep up with all of that responsibility. Keeping two little people alive is all I can handle.

What finally made potty training click for Monroe was the switch from incentivizing peeing to incentivizing staying dry. He could successfully pee on command any time and still have an accident. When we made that switch it finally clicked. We started w an hour then 2 then half day for a prize then all day, an outing, etc and it worked.

  17. I'm dreading potty training. Can't wait to read your tips & hear what worked for you. Hang in there!

  18. I'm the opposite of you - I want things done and I want them done NOW! ;) Hence why I sleep trained and potty trained "early" at 2 yrs 3 months. I'm impatient like that but regardless of when you do it, potty training is by far the most stressful, hard thing I've ever had to do parenting-wise! I loved OITNB have you watched Scandal? That's a great one. I haven't watched PLL either and I've been thinking of starting Prison Break too. Yay Netflix!

  19. Viv turned three on the 6th and still has zero interest in potty training. My oldest was trained before his 2nd bday. I don't want to rush her or force it, but damn. I'm sick of diapers. When we ask her when she's going to start using the potty, she sticks her tongue out at us and leaves the room.
