Stomach Flu Baby Hot Potato?

Do you know how many commercials are on TV for pizza? Literally at any given hour there are at least five. So many, in fact, that I could die happy if I never saw nor ate another pizza again.

Even as I type this my toddler is mimicking the sound one makes when one vomits. He can't quite understand why I kind of want to punch him in the face each time he does it. Perhaps it's because each time that he does I can feel the bile rising in my own throat.

It all started with my husband. The shakes, that cold clammy sweat you break out into before you're about to get to know the toilet on a level deeper than anyone should know a porcelain bowl and shortly after midnight on Monday, to the sound of tiny little gags outside of our bedroom door, it had quickly claimed the toddler.

Of course I felt terrible for my husband but there is nothing quite as heartbreaking as watching your two and a half year old whimper and heave while half asleep. It had been exactly one year since a 24-hour bug had claimed our family, to the day. Not exactly an anniversary I want to remember let alone celebrate.

I haven't slept on a bathroom floor since college and it's just as uncomfortable as I remember. This last restroom sleepover, however, didn't involve a theme party and a bit too much Jungle Juice, although I will say the hangover that stuck around afterwards feels roughly the same.

By six in the morning my husband and I were passing the baby back and forth between all too frequent trips to the bathroom. "Honey, quick. Take him!" "Babe, grab the baby!"

My poor sweet husband. He was so concerned about getting our toddler to throw up in the bowl. What a rookie. Isn't that why we registered for 12 sets of bath towels when we got married over 5 years ago?

I think it's time for some new towels.

In case you're wondering what it looks like to throw up for six hours, sleep on a bathroom floor and then sleep roughly 18 out of 24 hours the following day, I've taken it upon myself to share this picture with you. My house is a mess, there is far too much vomit-laundry to be done and I can't even think about leaving the house.

Apparently the stomach flu is currently a county epidemic. If you need us, we'll be holing it up in our house until summer.

  1. I hope you all feel better soon! That stomach virus is really going around here. My 8 year old and 6 year old had only had a stomach virus once each. This year, we had it in January, February, and March! Winter needs to end!

  3. Ugh. I know all too well what this is like, it's awful!!! Our entire family got the stomach flu when I was 25 weeks pregnant with Easton. We were all 3 throwing up non-stop for an entire day/night. It's bad enough to feel that way yourself, but when your babe is sick, it's heartbreaking! I hope everyone feels better soon!!

  6. Aw, I feel your pain (well minus the toddler vomit). We had the dreaded stomach bug TWICE. First started with the baby, who throws up without warning and leaves me to ponder, is she puking or spitting up? Is there a difference? only to leave me doing the same thing - which SCARED the bejesus out of the baby and leaves me calling the husband who has stepped outside to vomit since he cannot hit a toilet bowl to save his life!

I pray it leaves soon and everyone starts feeling better. the worst part of being a parent is getting sick and still having to care of the babies!

  13. ugh the worst. our whole fam was attacked with this a few months back and we ended up in the ER with the toddler after 3 continuous days of puking and not drinking or eating. terrible terrible experience. Followed by two grown ups that got that same bug. Honestly, I'm willing to trade washing every single dish by hand for the rest of my life if I never have to experience that again. I'll even throw in folding laundry.

  14. At least you've all got it at once so you can get it over with? Maybe? Trying to find something encouraging to say :(

I'm sorry. It sucks. It went through our house a few weeks ago and I wouldn't wish it on anyone--even my worst enemy.

    Hope Mac stays healthy!

  18. Oh my gosh, you are hilarious! I could totally picture myself at your house...although, I didn't want be there with all that it involved. We just went through it. It's awful.

I'm so sorry you all were sick. Having it is bad but having it all at the same time? Oh dear heavens. That's got to be the worst!

  19. Oh my gosh, you are hilarious! I could totally picture myself at your house...although I didn't want to be there given it was vomit central.

I'm so sorry y'all were sick. We had it at our house but we took turns. You took on the mack daddy of all sicknesses and had it as a team. Good heavens. That's got to be the worst.

Sending healing thoughts. Having a sick kid is enough stress and worry to make you barf in the first place. I feel your pain. No good. Welcome back to civilization.

  20. We were actually able to get the toddlers to vomit in the bowls yet we still had plenty of vomit laundry.
I hope you are all well on your way to feeling better!
