Apparently, I Have Poor Tree-Height-Judgement-Sense.

... and the marks on our living room ceiling to prove it.

Why is it when you go to a tree farm to cut down your own tree and you're standing amongst hundreds of 8-9 foot trees that they all miraculously look like they'll fit perfectly in your living room? I mean, afterall, they are clearly marked 8-9ft and should fit beneath our 8 foot ceiling. Oh, and while we're on the topic of said tree farms, where else can you pay sixty-five dollars for a freaking plant that you not only had to park miles away from, trudge through hoards of family tree-finders in the frigid cold for, to then only have to resort to manual labor and saw down yourself? Oh, right. All in the name of Christmas. It would have been better if there was free hot cocoa involved. Just saying.

So, about my affected tree-height-judgement-sense. Hubs and I brought home our gorgeous fatty mcfatty of a Christmas tree last weekend and had quite the time getting it to fit in the designated corner of the designated room. I wish you could have seen the look on Hubs' face each time he had to drag the tree back out the front door just to "take a little bit more off the bottom."

Finally, success! Although, I'm not quite sure if you can call it success, when despite sawing nearly 15 inches off the bottom, we still can't fit our pretty, sparkly, lovely gold star topper atop the tree.

Oh well. There's always next year. Just remind me to bring a tape measure
And some hot cocoa.

  1. Well, I think it looks beautiful! And I totally agree that they should have hot cocoa available. Here in Oklahoma, most of us buy fake trees and while I can't imagine how long it took you guys to get that sucker to fit in the room, I still wonder if we shouldn't start getting a real tree, or at least give it a try!

p.s. i loved your post yesterday, well the being a new mommy parts. i feel like i could have written it :)

  3. This happens to us EVERY year. This year we set out for a 5-6 foot tree even if it looked like Charlie Brown's tree in the field. And voila! It fit! :)

  4. Your tree is gorgeous! I have always wanted to go to a tree farm and cut down our own tree. We did that as kids and I remember it being so much fun. Now that we live in Florida it's not really an option. There's something less magical about going to Home Depot and picking out a tree in the garden section. But it was only $27 bucks so I guess that counts for something. :)

Glad you were able to make the tree fit - it looks perfect.

  6. Oops! Oh well, it looks beautiful! :) Yes, hot chocolate should be a necessity for tree chopping.

  7. Beautiful! Though I must say, after reading your story, I'm kinda glad all I had to do was go downstairs and hall mine up from the basement. No freezing cold. No saws. Just plug it in and go. It may lack that fresh pine smell, but that's what candle are for! :)

  8. It is GORGEOUS! My parents have always did a real tree. Once we are in a bigger house, you bet we will be doing it, too.

  11. Oh I love it! We have a tiny little house, so we ended up getting a fake tree last year to make sure we have the perfect size year after year. It's almost 8' tall and only about 2.5' wide with just enough space to get a pretty tree topper on top! :)

  12. Haha.

That reminds me of "Christmas Vacation" where they pick a tree that takes up the entire living room and they walk around covered in sap.

  13. Ha! Ours was too tall too and now it looks like someone took a crayon and scribbled on the ceiling where it was scratched. Oh well :)

  14. Oh it's so beautiful though!!!

I am very much a faux tree girl. Too many possibilities for insects and dirt otherwise :)
